How Palmer Luckey Created Oculus Rift | Innovation | Smithsonian Magazine
Palmer Luckey's exit from Facebook was not of his own choosing, the Oculus co-founder said on Wednesday. Luckey left Facebook in amid controversy surrounding his political contributions and financial support of far-right groups and internet trolls. Luckey's comments come at a sensitive time for Facebook. In addition to the controversies surrounding abuse of Facebook's platform before and after the presidential election, the company has been rocked by other high-profile departures, most notably Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger as well as WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum earlier this year. On the product side, Oculus has been slow to develop for Facebook. The company recently announced the Oculus Quest , its most promising portable VR headset, but there's still plenty of skepticism about whether it will ever be a mainstream technology.

Oculus founder says he 'got fired' from Facebook, suggesting a pro-Trump donation was to blame
Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus and former Facebook employee, admitted Wednesday on CNBC that he was fired from the social networking giant a few years ago, saying it was for "no reason at all. Luckey added that California, where Facebook is headquartered, is an at-will state. Luckey said he identifies politically as a libertarian. Much of Silicon Valley would be considered liberal. Since then, he's founded Anduril Industries, a defense technology start-up that's focusing on national security and artificial intelligence.
Just days before, the three video game industry veterans had agreed to found a company with Luckey to develop a device he called the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset that had been lauded as revolutionary by nearly everyone who had tested it. And therein lay the source of their anxiety: Not only were they walking away from a lot of money, the three were gambling on a product they had never actually tried themselves. From underneath this thicket, Luckey dug out a crudely fashioned electronics box, apparently the headset: a tape-covered black brick with wires poking out from every angle. As Luckey cheerfully struggled to get this jumble into working order, Iribe was all but holding his breath. Finally, Luckey handed the headset to Antonov, who pressed it to his eyes and, slowly, began to bob his head around, exploring a three-dimensional digital space.
